Welcome to Safmarine South Africa Local Home Page.

South Africa is a nation born of shipping. In the early 1600's many ships travelled the Spice route from Europe to the East. It was a long and arduous journey and the 'Cape of Storms' was a dreaded stretch of the voyage. Their lack of fresh fruit and vegetables on board resulted in many sailors dying of scurvy. Jan Van Riebeeck was sent to the Cape by the Dutch East India Company (DEIC) to start a colony that would grow fresh fruit and vegetables to supply the passing ships. In 1652 he dropped anchor in Table Bay.

The rich cultural tapestry of South Africa has earned it the title of 'the Rainbow Nation'. This is evident in the national anthem which has verses written in four of the eleven official languages. The South African economy is one of the largest and most powerful in Africa. South Africa is a fast growing tourist destination that boasts a wide range of holiday options.

Safmarine originated in South Africa in the 1940's and is still a household name. There are branches in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth and East London. Head office for South Africa is based in Cape Town, as is the management for the Africa Region.
